Just got done reading a Robin comic featuring a villain called "Johnny Warlock." He's a originally a smalltime enforcer by the name of "Johnny Warren" who works for a Gotham crime family, until he comes into contact with a demonic artifact that bonds to his chest and grants him a host of supernatural powers as long as he psychically feeds it enough people's lifeforce (starting with his own mother!!) He has several additional encounters with Tim Drake, and someone used the term "insta-sorcerer" to describe his transformation. I thought that was pretty cool, and was wondering if anyone had any similar characters they had encountered in comic books, novels, or even some role playing games. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The main villain "Vaati" from the game "The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap" falls under this category perfectly. He's originally a small harmless sprite like creature, who's mentor makes a Wish cap for the human race. Vaati is fascinated by human evil, so he steals the cap and wishes to become a powerful humanoid sorcerer, who of course encounters Link along the way. There was also a manga adaption of this game, that expanded on this origin a bit. I also think an earlier version of Gannon falls under this category with the Triforce of Power. But it's been several years since I played any of the games, so I could be wrong. Hope that helps.

Know you didn't mention TV shows, but I got to mention "Rumpelstiltskin" from Once Upon A Time. He was just an ordinary man, until he got the Dark One's cursed dagger.

Can the characters be mystics to begin with whose powers are enhanced by an artifact, or are you specifically looking for average non-powered people who gain instant magic power? If you're ok with them already having magic powers that get enhanced, I could recommend a few D&D characters and campaigns. Otherwise, I got nothing.

If your looking for a comic book character like "Johnny Warlock" I would recommend "The Shade" from DC's Starman comics. He's not a wizard per se, but does go from being an ordinary human into an immortal conduit for the dark force because of a botched mystic ritual. He's had 2 mini series that detailed this particular origin. The original 4 part mini series from 97, and a 12 part one that was rebooted in 2011. This version of the character also makes an appearance on the Stargirl TV series. Personally, he's my favorite Anti-Villain, but he does share some similarities to "Johnny Warlock."

When I was little, I saw an episode of The Little Mermaid where she went into a cave and was instantly turned into a sorceress. I remember I thought that was pretty cool.

The Disney version or the Anime one that ran in the early 90s?

From: guest , 23 days, post #8
They mean the Disney version. The episode was called "T'ank You for Dat, Ariel"

I do remember that one of the Final Fantasy games had a character who was possessed by an evil sorceress from the future, thus gaining her powers. But I can't remember which one, sorry.

Highlander 3:The Sorcerer. Kane kills the wizard Nakano and gets all his magical powers. Sweet deal!

Best book example I can think of is "The Devil's Coin" by Mark Manley. A boy finds a ancient silver coin hidden in his grandfather's old belongings. His grandfather was a WW2 veteran who got it off a Nazi soldier he killed. Turns out it's one of the 30 pieces of silver Judas was paid to betray Jesus. The coin is cursed, and fuses to the palm of his hand. He begins to turn evil, and gains immortality, regenerative abilities, and several psychic powers. He also begins to develops a desire to possess the other 29 coins. With each coin, his grow stronger. He compels his drug smuggling father to go to Europe to begin collecting the other coins he can sense. There's also a surviving Nazi organization that originally possessed his grandfather's coin, and a faction of the Vatican that is also trying to get to the coins first.

Try "Tetra" from Marvel's Conan the Barbarian comics. Sounds just like the character your looking for. It's one of my favorite storylines. Here's a couple of links detailing her corruption and backstory.
Enjoy!

Checked into that "Devil's coin." on Amazon and eBay. Its out of print, and a copy runs like $50 bucks on average, but it's definitely up my alley so I'll give it a try. Thanks for the recommend, Basil!

The Final Fantasy character that was mentioned earlier is Edea Kramer. Here's link to her Wikipedia page.

Hey Dren.,you mentioned comic books in your post. I read a lot of the old horror comics from the 50s-70s, and know a few stories where people are turned into witches against their will., or get ahold of an artifact that gives them evil magic, If your ok with the them being brief stories, I could recommend a few, even post a link to some comic book sites that host some of them because they've fallen into public domain. Let me know if that's what your after.

If you don't mind comedy, give the short story "Make Me A Witch" by R.L. Stine a try.

"Immortal" by Michael Bates. Evil teen witch Regina is an accident and switches bodies with love rival Amara. Amara wakes up with amnesia and Regina's powers. In the end she kills her original body, and goes hunting for other witches, vampires, etc...

Thank you for all the responses. In response to couple of questions: Yes, Juniper I wouldn't mind mages who gain enhanced powers from artifacts. Admittedly I would prefer they start out as ordinary humans, but beggars can be choosers. And to the guest who mentioned stories from horror comics; that would be just fine. Please add the posts.

It you're OK with movies, Amahnet from the Mummy, and the Enchantress fom Suicide Squad.
