Body swap, gender dysphoria and changes in society
From: guest (XA2) , 3 months, post #1
I always think about how the stuff that happens in the real world (social changes, for instance) affect the stories people tell, as well as what can/could happen in such stories. To give an example of what I mean: how does the fact societies in the last decades, in many countries, became more supportive towards trans people interacts with body swap stories and with what takes place in such stories?

Body swap is impossible, but assuming it happened, and assuming the new body didn't somehow magically morphed and “adapted” that person's – for the lack of a better world – “soul” into that new organism, so that they would end up feeling comfortable in it.

Assuming that this didn't happen, gender dysphoria would most likely be a factor, especially if the body swap was permanent or last several years, such as in the case of Lalola and other few medias such as the manga "Shishunki Bitter Change". This aspect is usually not addressed in most of the MTF mainstream content because they tend to be focused on either comedy or temporary swaps.

With that said, take a body swap story, such as the movie "Turnabout" from 1940, where the husband and the wife swap bodies – the idea of people transitioning were much more unthinkable back then than what it is now (paperwork, social prejudice, etc, etc...). So even if the characters suffered from gender dysphoria and wanted to transition, to take hormones and try to adapt their new bodies into being like their old selves.... it would be something more hard and complex. It would be a way more unrealistic path for the story to take.

Now compare this to the movie "Moglie e Marito", an Italian film from 2017, which sorta tells the same story, wife and husband swapping places. If the swap was permanent, the prospect of the couple transitioning seems slightly more possible in a story taking place nowadays. Like, you hear news about transgender couples, including cases where both were married to each other and both transitioned.

I think what I'm trying to say here is how do you see the prospective of a character who were subjected to body swap struggling with his gender identity and with a gender dysphoria induced by a magic event. Also, how do you see a world where society is more supportive towards transgenders influencing body swap stories. For instance, maybe there are more stories – especially on more mainstream content – involving the concept of a cisgender woman, swapping bodies with a man and then transitioning back to her original gender and becoming a trans woman.

Anyway, just some food for thought. I would love to know what you guys think about such theme.
