This is one of the best books I've read in a long time; not just
for the TG related plot, but also for Varley's facinating view of
the future. In his world, sex-changes are as routine as changing
your hair color, and gender roles are as flexable as one's whims.
The main character, Hildy, starts off the first half of the book as
male, then changes to a fully-functional female in order to deal
with his/her suicidal tendencies. A few other characters change
their sex, also (F-M and M-F).
The strength of this book is how realistic a character Hildy is,
especialy when "he" is dealing with the new-found emotions of being
female. I swear, I think Varley has dealt with TG issues of his
own.

Pretty damn fine peice of work, although it does become a bit glib.
I like the future acceptance of the way it all works, the social
ramifications of widespread tg are well considered, especially upon
role models and the family unit.

very good book. excellent read. It does challenge you at times.
Knowledge of The movie series with Hilde helps but is not
necessary. Clancy rates this the top read of the century.
