Justin Leiber book Beyond Rejection
Gender | |
The mind of Ishmael Forth is transfered into the body of the deceased spacer, Sally Cadmus. Sequals include "Beyond Humanity", and "Beyond Gravity". |

Preachy, speechy, touchy feely, overwrought, overdone,
excruciatingly PC, muddleheaded, wimpy... enough already!!! The
plot itself is actually pretty good. In fact, the twist ending
deftly vindicates what, at first, seems like a pretty contrived
story.*
But all the way through, the whole thing is ruined by endless
pontificating. It's Oprah in space! Sci-fi for invertebrates!
The silly preaching continues in the sequels "Beyond Humanity" and
"Beyond Gravity," but they don't even have decent storylines to
justify sitting through it. Talk about dated! The whole lot of them
just screams "written in the 1980s when we were off finding
ourselves!!"
Here's the clever part: The newly female Ishmael, renamed Patricia,
gets sent on a far fetched adventure seeking an evil body snatching
syndicate, then ends up confronting, and ultimately killing the
male Ishmael
body. Turns out the whole thing is a simulation designed to
reconcile him/her to the new female body (which IS real), end all
yearning for the old body, and take the new combination of mind and
body "beyond rejection." If you can stomach the preachy politics,
it might be worth it. Maybe.

Excellent exploration of reaction of male mind suddenly finding
itself in a female body - however the book cops out in the end in a
way that leaves a sour taste in anyone who expects serious plotting
and resolutions. Sequels degrade even further.

There is a special place in hell for authors who end stories with
'and he woke up and it was all a dream' Ishmael doesn't seem even
remotely curious about how he died and adapts to his new life (and
tail) in about a week. Also, my version had a major typo on the
front conver (hear I am).

While it does have a bad ending, the story up to it is a good read
and is recomended with a warning to skip the ending!

The central character spends a lot of the book NOT doing the sort
of things that most people would do. Example: If I was told I had
died and my recorded memories had been dumped into a different body
like a mixed drink poured from one glass to another, then my first
question would be "How'd I die?" and if the other characters tried
to give me the runaround, I'd start raiseing such a stink you'd
think Pepe La Pew had just let one rip! I liked much of the
book...but the ending killed all my good feelings for it. It's
worth a read, I guess, aslong as you stop before hitting the "So it
was all a dream?" copout ending. I do, however, have a question; If
I'm dead, and you dump a copy of my memories made several months
before I died into a new body, how is that copy supposed to be me?
I'm not a super christian, but even I dont think that the soul
works like that. Or am I being to metaphysical?

In my opinion, Ron has the best take on this one. Diverting, but
not really worth a purchase.
