Oz is great, as a general rule, and this book is no exception. Definitely a 4, although the TG is probably a 1. (This is a kid's book, after all :-) )

someone found a Youtube of a live stage production based on Frank L. Baum's "The Marvelous Land of Oz," from a 1981 VHS tape. It was put on Youtube by braisinhussy -- do a search for:
land of oz 12/12
to see the final segment where (offstage) Mombi lifts the spell from Tip. Search for 1/12 if you want to watch the video from the beginning.

Interesting, too, that here the role of Tip is played by a boy -- usually a girl plays Tip.

I've always wondered....why do we assume that Mombi was telling the truth. This bothered me as a kid. We see that she is devious. And actually, she never actually does say that Tip is Ozma. She just lets everyone draw that conclusion. So suppose Tip was a boy all along, and something else happened to Ozma. Or perhaps Mombi was telling the truth that she turned Ozma into a boy, but the boy wasn't Tip?

Good point from JayGee. Apart from Baum wanting to keep the plot relatively simple, there's really no reason why Tip HAS to be the transformed Ozma... okay, maybe someone there can detect exactly what kind of spell Mombi uses to make him into Ozma, and that turns out to be a reversal spell undoing an earlier transformation. We don't know that, though.

Nothing in the story seems to rule out the real Ozma having died in infancy or being stuck as another boy, and Tip simply being a convenient source of raw material to make into a fake Ozma. Kinky. Actually, even if Tip was Ozma all along, that could be one screwed-up girl.

Mombi was telling the truth because the Good Witch was wearing a white gem brooch that turns black whenever anyone lies in her presence.

Ah, forgot that. So that settles that. I had some vague memory of Glinda keeping Mombi honest somehow but I haven't read the book in ages.
