Great scene where Kirk in Jante's body looks in the mirror &
tocuhes her new face! Poor ending in my opinion - maybe they ran
out of time. Worth adding to any body switching or TG collection

Shatner was reported as quite sick with flu? through most of his
scenes female actress was quite believable as kirk. Many dislike it
for saying that starfleet doesn't accept female captains but the
woman was certifiably insane with jealousy. Don't take her word for
it! Superior to many epsisodes in 3rd season.

Starfleet's partriarchal attitude toward captaincy is referenced in
a piece of Trek TG fiction, "The Procrustean Petard", as well.
I find it strangely amusing that while the bridge crew is
ethnically diverse, attitudes toward sex roles are still stuck in
the 1950's.

I disagree with this. The Enterprise was a warship & had many
female crew memberss, many of which were in securiety. This was not
true in 50s or even 60s in the US navy. Granted there were no
female captains of star ships, but in the first movie there were
female admirals.

exactly, eric!
plus Roddenberry made current day themes part of the stories so a
story with women not being in command would fit right in during the
heyday of 'woman's lib'
And while kirk may be a man's man, listen to his last speech about
janice not accepting her life as a woman. And remember also that
Janice was MAD -- INSANE!!! AND A KILLER!!!!!!!
She stole a body and put someone into her body which she planned to
murder!
do not take her words as facts!
There were about a dozen ships in the Enterprise class at the time.
We have no real way to know to what heights women rose to in
starfleet at the time but they were certainly in many top ranks. On
the Enterprise years before Kirk was even an ensign, there was a
female in the 'number one' position second only to the captain.
That was established in the pilot episode!

To some, that's all it is. But IMO, Roddenberry, creator of the
series, had an agenda - he was attempting to make the world a
better place through education and awareness... albeit in an
entertaining way. :-)

If Star Trek was so sexist and discriminatory then why was Voyager,
Deep Space Nine, and The Next Generation so diverse? Voyager and
DS9 both had minority captains.

I'm thinking because the original Star Trek came out before you
could get sued for it.

Certainly TOS was revolutionary in its own way, but at the same
time that there was a Russian and a Japanese man in charge of the
ship's navigation and defense (which can be read as being pretty
deeply symbolic, given the socio-political issues that the USA had
both with the USSR and the rise of Japanese industrialization), the
typical female character was a nurse, a random yeoman, or (as
Nichelle Nichols described her character at one point) a glorified
switchboard operator. I'm not giving Mr. Roddenberry shit as a
person or as a writer for those casting decisions, I just find it
interesting that, while all men are brothers in the 23rd Century,
their sisters are still kept back.
Come to think of it, this is
especially bizarre given that the original pilot had a female
first officer (his wife, who went on to play Nurse Chapel and
Lwaxana Troi). I'm beginning to wonder if Turnabout Intruder was a
bit of social subversion on Roddenberry's part, doing an end-run on
whatever kept him from keeping the lady commander in the first
place, which I suspect that it was the network censors or producers
giving him a hard time. The sexual revolution may have been
building steam, but that didn't mean that the old men holding the
purse strings had to like it.

They're kept back from being "red shirts," too. Such chauvanism!
LOL!

The episode wasn't that bad. I watched for the first time ever
today. I admit Star Trek should have had a better series finale but
it was funny seeing Kirk in a woman's body and wearing a little
gown and slippers. LOL

I searched the site and did not find any entry for this so here you
go. I know this is an old thread but I came across something
related to this episode. A fan made series of Star Trek episodes
and vignettes are available at
Star Trek Continues
These seem to be fairly professional in nature. Included is a
vignette that recreates the ending scene of Turnabout Intruder.
Also of note is that Scotty is played by his son Chris Doohan.
