The main character, Soma Cruz, has the ability to capture the souls of defeated enemies, giving him access to special attacks or abilities. Capturing the soul of a Curly (a female demon) allows Soma to transform into a giant Curly for a short time.

I've been playing Castlevania games for a long time now and this game certainly does the series well. The soul-stealing part of the game is very well done. There are four types: bullet souls, which replace the sub-weapon system used in previous Castlevania games, ability souls, which give Soma new abilities, such as dash and double-jump, enchant souls, which add special effects that remain active as long as the soul is equipped, and guardian souls, which when activated create special effects. The Curly soul mentioned is such a soul. However, guardian and bullet souls require magic power, so the Curly transformation, without the Chaos Ring equipped (attainable upon absorbing all the souls, giving infinite MP) is quick. Unlike most Castlevania games, you don't play as a Belmont (untill you beat the game), but rather as someone completely unexpected.... There's an array of weaponry and abilities you can use, which really makes this game fun. And with a hidden character, Julius Belmont (it's obvious when you meet him: his animation is more fluid than the others) also boosts this game's lasting appeal. It's main quest is short though, so go ahead and try and grab as many souls as you can to get the most of this game. They'll come in handy later. In conclusion, this is a very good game, well worth the investment. The graphics are very good and the music is great, like most castlevania games. If you never played a castlevania game before though, keep in mind this is very different from the others. You may want to check out Harmony of Dissonance for the GBA to really understand this series' gameplay and how Aria of Sorrow is quite unique.
