It's a shame this isn't available as a truly free service. $72/year
is a little steep, and if they're going to offer a free trial then
it really should be free. The idea of handing over my name,
address, phone, and credit card info just to look around is a bit
much. Heck most people on this board (including the person who
submitted this entry) won't even register an email address.
Anyone know of any free alternative VR worlds?

I'm glad that I jumped in when they were giving away truly free
service. I have only the very basic package but I don't have to pay
anything.

I take your points Lady S but most MMO 'free' trials require credit
card info a.) to limit the free trials to 1 per card number and b.)
to hope they can start billing you the second the free trial ends.
I also play second life and it is fun but it's also a highly
commercialised environment that can feel quite tacky at times. As
for appearance, if you want the best-looking clothes, hair etc
and/or a nice house. it will cost you extra money on top of the
basic subscription.
It has only a small fraction of the number of players that the
leading MMOs do and the makers seem to keep making dumb moves
rather than try to broaden the player base. I'm not convinced
whether I'll still be playing it in a year or so.
I think its something people need to have a look at to see if they
like it or not. It's a great concept but has its flaws IMO.

Erm, the only subscription fees that Linden Labs charges are for
people that opt in to rent land. If they charged a recurring fee
for basic, I would have got rid of my account ages ago.
Emma's comments were right on the money, from my experiences.
Unfortunately as well, some of the in-game liason staff display a
distinct lack of professionalism, and the whole thing is set up to
encourage a victim mentality. Many people will complain to the
liasons at the drop of a hat, and even being accidentally bumped
into pops up a dialogue box that takes you to the complaint form.

Well, I didn't have complaints yet. Off course some things will
cost, but you can't get everything for free. I'm playing the girl
of my dreams, have many girlfriends an occasianally sex with a guy.
Which is nice!!
Just check it out with the free account, it's fun!!
And I think there should be an office of Metamorphose there to help
T-girls to become beautifull!!!

Bottom line: These things aren't charities. They're businesses
trying to sell a product for a price in order to get a return on
their invetment.
I love the ideas of MMORPG's, but they do cost a lot, when you add
it up. For that reason I am no longer playing Ultima Online & I
quite Earth and Beyond long before it quit itself.

Second Life has Basic Accounts, which are free and last forever,
and Premium Accounts, which are not free.
Second Life used to have a free trial. Now it does not have a free
trial. It has free accounts and pay accounts. But Second Life does
not have a free trial.
Hey, on an unrelated note, you know what would be cool? It'd be
cool if people started realizing that Second Life stopped the free
trial policy and started a free accounts versus paid accounts
policy in its place. Like, practically a bloody year ago now it's
been since Second Life did that. That would be great. Because then
maybe people would stop going around saying how Second Life has a
free trial but you have to give a cc# just for the trial and it's
only seven days omg, and they'd realize that Second Life does not
have a free trial. And then I'll have one less thing to slam my
head into my desk really, really, really hard over, which would be
wonderful because my head is starting to hurt.
After that, maybe people will start learning that you don't
necessarily need to give out a credit card number to get a basic
account, though that's probably going a bit too fast. And who wants
to give out their cell phone number, anyhow.

In point of fact, Second Life DOES have a free trial (from their
site):

Granted, it's for additional accounts, but nevertheless there is
such a thing as a Second Life free trial. And if you read my post
you'd see my concern was that their "free basic account" still
required that I fork over my personal financial information. That's
just not going to happen.
Now, may I suggest you place some sort of pad on your desk? It
would appear that even very tiny events are sufficient to trigger
your head smacking.

Two free VR Universes that I can think of off the top of my head
are There (www.there.com) and Entropia Universe
(www.entropiauniverse.com).
"There" has a large friendly community and every account now comes
with a free hoverboard. You buy things with Therebucks, which are
converted from real money at a rate of 1,800 T$ = 1 USD.
Entropia Universe (formerly Project Entropia) is much like There,
but it has the added elements of a Futuristic Sci-Fi theme and a
skill system which allows you to hunt and create items (armor,
weapons, et al). This makes it somewhat more similar to traditional
MMORPGs. The unit of currency here is the PED (Project Entropia
Dollar), which equals 100 PEC (Project Entropia Cents). What makes
this VR Universe stand out is that it has a Real Cash Economy. This
means that you can convert real money to PED and then back again
(for a nominal fee) at a rate of 10 PED = 1 USD. With this system,
all the virtual items have a real value and you can actually make a
profit if you're resourceful enough.

The only problem that I have with SecondLife, is that I can't get
onto it with the computers in the library. They said that they are
fine with students playing games on the comptuers, (so long as they
aren't holding up the computer for people that need to use it for
research). But it will get to the screen that sez "Verifiy
protocols..." and then it quits. I just won't be able to use it
until I get something better than dial up at my house.

My best guess is that the library's computers are firewalled.
Poking at the SL tech support pages strongly suggests the same
thing.

From their FAQ:

12036/UDP, and 13000-13050/UDP.

Although 443 is a generic (SSL), all the others are very non
standard (IANA lists them as "unassigned"). I'm not the least bit
surprised to hear that they are blocked and it's very unlikely
you'd be able to persuade the library to open them up.

yeah i love this game! i just got started a couple of days ago and
im facinated by how vast it is. my character name is brianna
bertrand, and i made her a very curvy/busty latino woman with dark
hair and eyes...like a fantasy come true :-D
