I'm going to review mostly the transformation content and parts of
the story.
The main character, Damian, who is dying, pays to have his
consciousness transferred into a younger, lab-grown body to escape
the clutches of old age... and death. A process that is so
exclusive, that they strive to hide its very existence.
Upon waking in his new body, Damian must work to gain motor control
over his new physical form, and he even relates his current state
akin to being a toddler. At one point Damian struggles to his feet
to gaze into a mirror, whereupon he seems to be satisfied of his
new face. While he's working on learning to physically control his
new body, he experiences powerful hallucinations, to which he is
given a drug to counter.
After acclimating to his new body, Damian enjoys his newfound
youthful vigor. Eventually, though he begins to suspect that there
is something more to the still occasional hallucinations that he
has been experiencing, than the doctor has been telling him.
The hallucinations... memories seem like a pretty logical way to
portray the conflict of two minds or persons fighting for control
over one body. As if the original person sometimes slips back
through to haunt the invader.
Through the course of the movie, the discovery of the truth and the
further growth of the character, as well as resolution of some
unresolved issues for Damian, lead to a somewhat satisfying
conclusion... perhaps even for Damien.
In conclusion, the male-to-male mind-swap did result in some slight
realization of being in a new body (beyond having to re-learn motor
control), but no real exploration. While there were two other
characters (also male-to-male) who were swapped, those swaps
weren't really explored or exposed greatly. But the largest
component, in my opinion, of this movie was the way that it
portrayed a possible side-effect of such a swap - the struggle of
the old to fight the new.

The problem with this film is that the man in his younger body
doesn't seem even slightly like what you'd expect Ben Kingsley to
be like. It's just Ryan Reynolds being Ryan Reynolds again. Orphan
Black it is not.
Even more baffling than Ryan Reynolds doing this
film:

(sound familiar)
... is that anyone made it considering Self/Less already existed.

"... doesn't seem even slightly like what you'd expect Ben Kingsley

Well, except for a few little displays. But a few seconds of show,
several times after the transfer does seem a bit... lacking. So
yes, Orphan Black
it is not... Not even close.

What's remarkable about Orphan Black is when you have one clone
impersonating the other, they can range from very bad to very good,
but even the very good ones aren't quite perfect but also aren't
quite perfect in a way that you can tell which clone it really is.
First class acting performance all around every time it happens.

(... and by very bad, that's always on purpose as some clones just
aren't as good at this whole impersonation thing, I should have
said.)

But Orphan Black
is a completely different story, and this review thread for Self/less
is certainly not the place to discus it. So, let's bring this
thread back on-topic.

The story, no but the technique of one person inhabiting another,
yes.
Tatiana Maslany ++ (tick). Ryan Reynolds (eh ....)

Apparently they weren't able to film Ben Kinglsey's scenes first,
so there was no material for Reynolds to imitate.

... and of course, this being Sir Ben Kingsley's first ever film,
there was as a result nothing to reference what his performance
might have been like ...

"... there was as a result nothing to reference what his

On the contrary. There may have been too many from which to choose.
Which one of Sir Kingsley's past performances would you have used
as your guess? ~shrugs~

Perhaps we should steer this thread back to a more thorough course
of actually reviewing the movie. We've drifted a bit from the
actual purpose of this review thread.

The film was a complete waste of Tarsem Singh.
