Just caught this film again tonight (it's been getting a lot of
airplay lately) and I have to say it really is the quintescential
transformation film. The more I watch it the more I come to believe
it's one of the few films that treats the body switch theme with
any real depth. I highly recommend it if you've not yet seen it...

Couldn't agree more. It certainly ranks as one of the more
intelligent, thoughtful and realistic (if that's at all possible!)
switching movies. Only complaint I had with it was that there
wasn't enough about the old man's experiences as Meg Ryan, though i
guess you can't have everything. I particularly like the scene when
he/she falls to sleep on Alec Baldwin's shoulder on the plane to
Rio, when the previous Rita was an insomniac. Good stuff!

The movies Ok but if you get a chance to see a good performce of
the play do so. Its much better as a play than a movie.

I put a short clip of the scene where they switch places up on my
site. But there is much MUCH more worth seeing in the actual film.

This movie always seemed weird to me. They were just too "Eh-
Whatever" about the whole swap. Almost like they both knew it was
going to happen. And the odd thing was they never really played the
gender card. The two swapped people were just too accepting of
their new genders. Almost like they were asexual.

I absolutely disagree. I think both showed the shock that comes
from having an impossible wish suddenly come true. Remember, the
thing that drove the swap was that both characters deeply wanted it
so it's not surprising that there were no "adverse" reactions to it
when it occured.
As for them acting "asexually", well the old man was already on his
death bed, it's not suprising there was no angle there. But Meg
Ryans character absolutely explored this issue. There were several
scenes wrapped around this, including an impassioned scene early on
where she make it clear she wanted to have a child. It seems pretty
clear he (she) was very conscious of her new sexual state.

does the man stay in her body or do they switch back?

Yes, they do switch back by the end.
And I agree with Lady Sekhmet, while they showed Rita in the old
guy's body just wandering around, the old guy in Rita's body was
having a lot of fun being young and sexy. The mirror scene in the
bathroom, even though it was barely a few seconds, was still
hilarious, combined with the rest of the scenes of the new,
hyperactive and outgoing Rita. Since it was sorta mutual consent
(with how both Rita and him wanted it) the old guy honestly wanted
to live it up the best he could, compared to how timid Rita was. He
even asked to have main character's child, and studied up on Rita's
diaries to try to be as accurate as possible. Though, by the end
both realize they liked what they originally had and once they
admit how they originally switched, then they just switch back in
the same way (short darkening of scene), with the old guy walking
off resigned to his fate, leaving the two newlyweds to celebrate
together.
