Actually it is two people (1 female & 1 male) sharing a single physical form. At the stroke of midnight the form switches from one to the other. The female form is his partner in the detective agency (who happens to very rich). The original personalities stay with the proper form through out the series.

No, no... no body swap, for the most part.

The main character, Ranma, wakes up from a car crash thinking his sexy female partner is killed. But when he does something daring for a change (he's a wimp by nature), and is fondly remembering her, at the stroke of midnight, he transforms. What happens afterwards is actually his partner is now in his place, and she goes about her business.

So it's more like at the stroke of midnight, Ranma will disappear, and his partner takes his place in space. They DO physically transform between one another, but they aren't the same person; they just happen to swap positions, really.
