Description
In The Hobbit, (prequal to Lord of the Rings), Bilbo Baggins and
the Dwarves meet up with Boern after they escape the goblin caves.
Boern is basically a hermit, complete with his own isolated cabin
in the woods at the edge of the mountain, but at night he changes
into a bear. He apparently has full control over this powerful
form, using it to capture and question a goblin search party to
verify the story told by his guests. At the end of the book, he
even makes an appearance (in bear form) during the battle of 5
armies.
Unfortunately being an otherwise minor character in the book, Boern
was cut from the animated movie. Hopefully though, he'll be reborn
in the live action movie should it ever be filmed.
