Description
Nell Snyder is the guardian of her orphaned 6-year-old niece, Eva.
She is concerned over Eva's behavior with a Creole doll her
grandfather gave her, a china doll in the image of a little black
girl. Eva names the doll Numa and treats as if it were a real
person. One day, Nell follows her niece and Numa into the forest.
She sees a little black girl, Eva's age, playing with (what she
thinks is) Eva's doll. Nell frightens her away, but then discovers
the doll is now in the image of a white girl, and her face looks
just like Eva's. She realizes that the doll had a voodoo curse on
it: now Numa is flesh and blood, and Eva is a china doll.
