DID YOU MEAN 'BANE'?
I'm really starting to think this thread ought to be locked...
nothing but spam as far as the eye can see.

Guess there wouldn't be as much spam if we had some REAL
information about FM site.

You'd think some enterprising web designer among us would create
2009's answer to FM. Demand is high.

Re web designers new FM comparable site for 2009 - see Fictionmania
IRC re the comments from Nameless Fairy & Dr Fixit about starting
up a new site that has all the stories listed thru the
fictionmirror site plus the possibility of posting of new stories

It appears that the meaning of "spam" is different for some of us.
I consider this to be a conversation, not "spam as far as the eye
can see".

The search options on that site were crappy, which is to say
cutting edge circa 1996. I don't see what the point is of trying to
preserve the site exactly as it was. To me, it seems like
arrogance.

Obviously someone with access to the story archive has put them all
up for folks to peruse at FictionMirror
. This appears to be the work of "Nameless Fairy" whom you should
commend for at least making it all available, even if it is hosted
on a relatively slow residential server.
There also seems to be a raw archive of all the text stories
available for download which someone with the initiative to do so
could design a site around. The archive appears to be missing the
"SWI" content, not that that's any great loss.
I do agree with kreplach however, I recall the layout of FM,
especially the search options, to be primeval. But none of you has
the right to gripe about it unless you try to setup an operational
site like it yourself.

Hmmm... apparently I should have verified that link first - I guess
FictionMirror is down now too. However the archive of all the
stories appears to still be live here:

FictionMirror has moved to a more stable server.
Please, use www.thetroom.com/fictionmirror

It's okay. As soon as the task force all get over their bouts with
bronchitis, swine flu, chicken pox, whooping cough, and malaria,
I'm sure they will update the site.

When (or if) Fictionmania resurfaces, it won't fix the problem of
the rapidly declining variety of tf sites of all kinds. There used
to be a ton of different sites, now just a few survive, and even
fewer update on a regular basis.
There are other options out there, but most are under the radar
right now. It would be great if tf writers used some of the great
free resources out there like blogs or deviant art pages, etc. and
then use sites like the tfstories hub to link to. It's time for TF
sites to go Web 2.0.

Those of us who have been around a long time know that TF sites
come and go with the wind. Few sites last much more than a year,
but others pop up. Pauls site here is one of the great exceptions
of course. Fictionmania was too, at least until last year. We're
just in a lull right now, by the end of the year there may be
tenfold more sites.
The other side of the coin is that there is far more media out
there to enjoy. Youtube, Hulu and other sites give us lots of on
demand video clips. And sites like transfur.com and tgcomics.com
are examples of sites offering some really premium content.

Why is everyone slagging off FM's search options? They were
comprehensive and got the job done. If anyone can name a TG story
site with better options I'd be very interested

You are correct--there aren't any better TG story sites with better
options, but, at the same time, that's also what's so sad.
