Is Fictionmania offline? Over here in the UK I haven't been able to
access it for over 24 hours.

Steffen, an FM task force member, left a note at TG Fiction saying
that there has been a hardware malfunction and that they are
working on it.

Not being funny here, but that's what they get for running their
website on antique equipment and refusing to migrate to something
more modern

you want to pay for it?

Most of the older stuff is way more reliable. When the P2 systems
came out they were built for a 20 year life use expectancy. Most
stuff today is built for a max of 5 years of use. My file server is
on a P3 Linux platform and it sends files every bit as fast as my
new quad core. Why mess with what works.

"you want to pay for it?"...they will not accept donations and I
suggest it be a pay site for a nominal fee

I don't see how fictionmania goes down all the time.

mostly, a p2 was built because it was expensive and it did sorta
need to last a while. But I'd say any computer nowadays can last a
while, it's just that tech increases exponentially every year.
Running linux on an old box can keep these running for the extra 5
years, or an old software (windows) <-- most won't take the jump
and buy new pc.
That being said, fictionmania is scary slow most of the time and
this downtime is extremely odd. Thankfully is non-profit or they'd
be loosing money left and right but it's the fans that are lossing
out. Its too bad they can't swallow their pride (cause in post 8
says they won't accept donations to upgrade equipment)

For all the flaws--it's frustratingly slow and the downtime gives
me withdrawal symptoms--I gotta give props to the task force. It's
a great content site, and they provide and maintain it for free.
Moderating a message board, administering a server, and posting
stories all take work. They're giving something to the community.
There's a place for constructive criticism, but I have to think
gratitude is more appropriate than complaints.
After all, we'd miss it if it went away. It didn't take long for
people to notice the downtime. $0.02.

I'd donate if I could. Especially if they'd upgrade the site code
and implement a rating system.
