I have a proposal. Let's fund it. A cheap hosting plan is only
about $60 a year. Add roughly $10 for a domain. Most hosting plans
give you unlimited email accounts.
So, anyone who donates a few dollars gets a free Fiction Branches
email address they can use to communicate with other people with
similar interests.
We pick a hosting service that can fund from Paypal, and set up a
Paypal donate button so anyone can drop money in.
And a group of us agree to manage the whole thing, so one person
dropping out won't shut down the site.

I'm up for paying for part of the cost, as long as Paypal can be
accepted.

It has been brought to my attention that Paypal's Terms of Service
expressly forbid adult sites.

There is a significant logistics problem here, I suppose.

The only thing I can think of is for me(or someone else), to accept
responsibility, and then arrange for people to provide them with
contributions, but then we end up back with a single point of
failure.
I looked into it, and I can pay one lump sum to cover hosting and
anonymous domain registration for 3 years, and thus minimizing that
part of it, and hope contributors will came to help offset the
loss. Still just thinking about how to work this.

Interesting idea. But you can classify Fiction Branches as
something else other then adult site. By adult site Paypal just
means a porn site. Technically, being like Writing.com, you might
be able to get a paypal account for it independantly.
I'd say investigate other like-content sites to see how they do
their set up, writing.com, cyoc, etc... see how they handle
payments and whatnot and replicate that.
Also, a domain name and a web host are two different things. It's
not enough to simply get a server wtih space, you need to get one
that has enough bandwidth to handle the site.

Take a look at Hostgator's Hatchling plan. It uses the
term...unlimited.
I usually run my own sites, but I'd rather keep this separate and
not host it with my other stuff.

I can understand that. I have hosting services myself, but for many
reasons I'd rather keep my "mainstream" stuff seperate too.

I'd offer space on my server but I'm about to enter an uncertain
period financially and my hosting commitment is about to run out. I
don't want to put you all through this again in February. :P

Give me a week or two to look at some things. I maybe able to work
something out? Keep working on other options though, and posting
updates here. We need something stable that we can plan ahead for a
future situation like this.

If you are willing to be the 'front person' for this, and offer
space, and others are willing to send money to support the
service..maybe we can help each other.

I second the idea of having a Front Person. I wouldn't mind
pitching in when its needed. I dearly miss the stories as well :/

Has anyone been able to contact Zach? Do we know what the hourly
peak/monthly bandwidth for the site are?
|
From: guest (Zach)
, 137 months, post #175 |
Zach hasn't replied to my mails in a week and I can't get in touch
with countD. Zach will eventually return my messages (last time it
took nearly a month).

Ill be the front person, and ill look at maybe picking up a real
domain name for it? I've got the hosting to do it. All we need to
do get in touch with Zach and countd and see whether they'd be
alright with everything and whether my hosting will be sufficient.
I'm on the deluxe for godaddy and don't know what FB's resource
needs are.
I'm sure I'll be able to put together money for renewal this year,
especially if I get a little help from the community. Plus the
domain name won't be difficult. I won't talk about domain names
till we are ready to talk about moving the site and everything.
What do you all think?

From: guest (Brayn)

I can give you Zach's contact details quite easily. I just have to
rustle them up. He hasn't answered me in over aweek (That last post
was me, I put in Zach's name for some weird reason but I was drunk
so I just got confused :P ).
He can give you the requirements of what has to be up, as for
donations, well that'll be up to the folks on FB. You could go to
the old FB forums (People are still active there) and ask for
donations while you're putting the server together.
As for domain names, if necessary we don't even need one. Zach can
put a redirector in on the old transform.to FB domain name to point
it to your server, should save a little money at least. But we'll
jump off that bridge when we come to it.

Things are getting interesting fast. Someone was enthusiastic and
snatched up the fictionbranches.net address for us. I've got server
space being renewed for me within the week, and looks like we may
have a plan about to be set in motion. I'm leon.mosel on gmail if
you want to get in contact about Zach.

The fictionmania.net domain is in our hands. I purchased it today,
so once we have hosting, we should be set.

Yeah, I should provide contact info, as well. I'm allisonvoorhees
