During one part of this strange book, the hero is turned into a woman.

Some of my favorite TG related scenes occurs in this book. I feel the author handles the transition descriptions well... they are, hummm, dreamlike. I suppose this was written in a time when people were ...uh.... expanding their minds, and the entire book has that SPACEY feeling. The reader always feels the ALIENS (oooooh-ahhhhh-ooooooh) are so superior to humans... and the message is really "why can't we be more like them?" in its form. Oh yeah, the TG! I was disappointed the main character reacts so negatively to being turned into a woman. He misses a great chance to "expand his experience" - and is down-right distructive of the body wherein he finds herself... wow! The section isn't that long - but the images remain in your mind long after the book is completed. Buy this one and dog-ear the pages where transition occurs. Warning: some pretty elaborate sex is going on during the story telling. The change occurs doing one of these (perverted?) ... err...interactions. Recommended (the book, not the ... uh... gymnastics!)

Its a great scene, though a little bizare. The main character Clay finds himself in the future where humanity has ivolved rather bizarly. Clay calls them the Son of Man and each has the ability to swap genders. During a rather sexual ritual in which Clay particapates he finds that he to has swapped genders, and is made love to be the now male son of man (also called Skimmer). He finds the sensastions pleasurable and confusing yet after the event he decides he doesent like the idea of being invaded, the thought of another man taking him and impregnating him worries him. He eventually changes back to his old self after several different form changes.
