Ultimate Spider-Man #102
Gender
Spider-Man meets the Ultimate version of Spider Woman, and discovers that she gaining super powers wasn't the biggest change her life. (Spoiler Text)

Even in the olden days, Spider-Man has been known to be quite sophisticated!

I'm not an oldschool comic fan, but I do get annoyed when I read a comic, and it takes half a year for it to resolve the main plot, and even then, it might just be setting things up for something else.

Considering clones in Spiderman usually share all the memories of the original, guess this could count. Finding this out is pretty disturbing for Pete, but its even more disturbing for his clone. Though I never really cared for the Ultimate universe as... well, things just seem to be getting worse and worse. For instance-

Clarification on bisected's post:

You are confusing genes are chromosomes. Genes are coded instructions to make proteins which are found on "large" (comparatively) chromosomes. If a chromosome was a book, the genes would be the text printed inside.

X and Y refer to the last pair of chromosomes in human cells. Each person receives two sets of 23 chromosomes. The first 22 are called autosomes and are usually alike in size and shape (unless there is some defect like cri-du-chat). The last pair are the sex chromosomes which are the ones designated X and Y. In fact, all the chromosomes are X shaped to some degree or another. The Y, normally found only in males, is much smaller than the X. However, it is not the chromosomes themselves that determine gender.

Each chromosome is made of a long strand of DNA wound around proteins, like thread around a spool. The DNA thread contains sequences of bases that represent your genetic code (at least in parts - genes actually seem to make up a very small percentage of the DNA code). There is a gene on the Y chromosome called SRY which is actually the what decides you will develop into a male. Without that gene, all human embryos would develop to be phenotypically female. (and while this is slightly off topic, anyone interested in writing TG fiction should be aware that the XX/XY system works only in most mammals. Other groups do it differently).

Note that genes tend to move around a bit and occasionally cross over to their partner. Thus if the SRY gene hops over to an X chromosome, it is possible for that man to father an XX male child, or an XY female. So it is technically possible, I suppose, that the SRY gene was damaged during the cloning process. However, if the book actually states that she carries two X's, I suspect that would have been a deliberate choice. Because Y chromosomes are so small they are missing many genes that would normally have a "partner" on the X. This results in many more X-linked recessive traits being expressed in males than in females, including genetic abnormalities. Some have suggested this is the reason why males are more likely to be miscarried than females. So it may be the X was "doubled" to increase the chances of the clone being grown to term (a stretch scientifically, but down right plausible compared to getting super powers from a spider bite).

Wait, so I can't get super powers from spider bites? Why the hell have I been letting every spider I see bite me raw? What a waste...

Next you're going to tell me I can't survive exposure to cosmic or gamma radiation.

What about getting struck by lightning? SHAZAM!

From: guest (why am i doing this) , 211 months, post #26
Spidey's lucky i got bit by a radioactie hamster and all i got was big cheeck pouches and front eeth tat don't stop growing.

From: Random14 , 211 months, post #27
[sarcasm No, you should be struck by lightning while covered in a bunch of random strange chemicals. That'll work for sure. [sarcasm

On the other hand, regarding the clones, maybe they thought might as well try as many possible workable genetic combinations on Peter Parker's DNA as they can. Not that they care at all about the clones of course.

From: guest (anonymous me) , 211 months, post #28
Dale, everyone knows lightning never strikes twice (unless you are a member of the Marvel family, of course, and you are a Ribbons!)

From: guest (Anonymous) , 211 months, post #29
Lightning only works if:

1) It's magic lightning (ala Shazam!)

or

2) It's created by a superhero trying to save multiple realities from being destroyed, so he runs fast enough to break the speed force barrier, sending him through time which results in him creating the lightning bolt which strikes said chemically soaked individuals (one of which is himself) to give them super-speed.

From: guest (InKpott) , 211 months, post #30
Now that's a twist on a theme . The magic lightning ? . . made me think about John Byrne's BaBe series , how he used lightning and magic to bring about that character's beginnings .Have to admit , it was original . . .

I assume you guys are poking fun at the non-believability of superhero/villain origins? Well, i think that many of them are believable - many people take certain origins as granted for the whole genre - and more are believable if you take the company's story universe in tow.

From: guest , 211 months, post #32
by in tow i meant that if you realize that such things (such as the green lantern corps) cannot exist in real life but can exist in realms in which certain things can. Of course, many of the frequently cited origins are such that they are borderline (and sometimes blatantly) ridiculous even in those realms.

From: guest , 211 months, post #33
alot of those were made before the 80's & after the 40's

From: guest (InKpott) , 211 months, post #34
Grren Lantern Corps is possible(in theory) if you think about the federation in Star Trek . The Lanterns were more of a active force in the role of field agents , though . . . .

From: guest (InKpott) , 211 months, post #35
And yes ! Peter Parker was a science major bigtime ! That's what I've said over and over again ; the people doing stories at Marvel aren't doing those characters the way they could because they fail at doing the homework/research on the vary characters themselves . It's like they think we're going to buy any ol' thing they slop together . That just pure bullsh^t . . .
Write a good story , get a great artist to illustrate it and bam! . . .we might just buy it . . .

You know, I don't think this counts as a transformation. She may be Peter on a genetic level, but she isn't the real Peter Parker. She was born female. For it to be a transformation, the real Peter would become female, but he didn't.

From: cj , 211 months, post #37
I'll borrow a few of Lady Sekhmet's words (post #7):

>>> "... since she has all his memories it would seem, from her perspective, as though she was transformed."

I would consider it borderline, but agree that it's close enough to be listed here.

:-)

this whole story doesn't belong in the gender category one for this being a clone and not him actuallly tranforming or switching genders as this is also a story involving cloning which usually means a clone of the same gender the same age it has the exact characteristics as the clone so in reality not a gender change at all

From: guest (ScotiaNova) , 207 months, post #39
But the whole thing about the clone is that she has all of Peter's memories and so effectively, as she remembers it, she went to sleep male and woke up female.

From: sara_00_0 , 207 months, post #40
Yeah, even though she is not the same Peter Parker, she has his Male Memories, and thinks of herself completel as originally being Peter. She has the same love of MJ that Peter has, and really shows how a male mind in a female mind could create an identity crisis of sorts.
