China online drama "Go Princess Go" (Time travel m2f) got banned

Why China wants to ban everything?

http://qz.com/600616/this-viral-internet-comedy-about-time-travel-and-bisexuality-has-suddenly-been-banned-in-china/?utm_content=buffere470b&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

A modern playboy accidentally time travels back to an ancient dynasty and becomes the wife of a crown prince. A straight man inside a woman’s body, he enjoys flirting with his husband’s concubines and touching their bodies with impunity. But after discovering his more feminine side, he truly falls in love with his husband, and has sex with him.

That’s the story that unfolds in China’s recent internet hit Go Princess Go. After its December premiere, the romantic comedy has earned Chinese video streaming site LeTV more than 50,000 paid subscribers and $1.5 million in profit. After last week’s finale, the online series attracted over 2.4 billion views in total, the producer and broadcaster of the show said.
Unexpectedly, the viral show also just became a victim of Chinese censors. LeTV took down the drama off its website on Wednesday (Jan. 20), and issued a statement that it was asked by “relevant department” to do so. It said the drama would be put online again after “optimizing” the content, but didn’t say when.

The low-budget adaptation of a novel has been a huge success thanks to its blending of time travel, bisexuality and gender identity. Sexual scenes and vulgar language have probably helped the show gain viewers, and attracted censors. Here’s a (kinda SFW) trailer:

China’s top media watchdog, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT), is notorious for its heavy-handed censorship (the name alone shows the agency’s reach). Last year, it ordered TV soap opera The Empress of China to cut all the shots of buxom ancient women’s cleavage before the show was allowed to go back on air. It has issued several orders to content providers—especially TV programs—to avoid a long list of topics from masturbation to one-night stands.
But its tightening grip had never really touched online series like this before. Besides LeTV’s Go Princess Go, five other online series were taken offline, financial publication Caixin reported. An unnamed employee of Tencent told Caixin the internet giant pulled two of them because it was self-censoring.

Like their foreign counterparts, China’s video streaming providers have begun to produce original content, from helping self-made stars produce better videos (like YouTube) to producing their own programs from talk shows to soap operas (like Netflix). Prominent players include LeTV, Tencent, Alibaba-owned Youku Tudao and Baidu-owned iQiyi, to name just a few.
The internet dramas Chinese censors shut down have already streamed all their episodes, so most die-hard fans won’t be left without knowing what happened to their favorite characters. One of them, The Lost Tomb, which was reportedly (link in Chinese) produced at a record cost of around $760,000 per episode, has brought 2.6 million new paid subscribers to video site iQiyi, translating into almost $8 million in profits. In LeTV and iQiyi’s business models, paid subscribers are allowed to watch all the episodes in one season instead of waiting for weekly updates.

Ironically, The Lost Tomb had already made changes from the original novel it was based on to get around China’s censors. In the online series, the leading tomb raiders voluntarily hand in the treasure they raided to the government every time.

This fresh round of government intervention is likely to serve as another warning sign to Netflix, which is entering global markets except China. Entering China could mean “many years of discussions,” as CEO Reed Hastings said, not to mention a bunch of domestic rivals, and a tough regulator.

Update: The banned is rescinded but some scenes are cut. The good news is that the producers are considering makes a movie version !

http://www.chinadailyasia.com/lifeandart/2016-01/28/content_15379653.html

The hit online drama Go Princess Go, which was removed from the Internet a week ago is now back, after editing that cut one third of the show.

"We cut about seven to eight minutes in each episode to ensure it could be played online. Some of the cut parts might be fun to watch, but we've no choice," said Gan Wei, the drama's executive producer.

Fans rushed to watch the new series as soon as it was available again. Many voiced their disappointment in Sina Weibo microblog posts, claiming the new version lost its hilarious essence.

"The adaptation cut the most exciting parts of the play, almost harming the plot," wrote Yoko in her Weibo post.

"Too bad all the kissing and bed scenes are gone," wrote Dongfangxiyue.

The drama, which received a record 2.6 billion views by the time it was taken off the air, was a much ridiculed funny fashion costume drama. The audience used to mock on the props and costumes so much that it was once the No.1 trending topic on Weibo for 10 consecutive days.

"The drama is indeed on a limited production budget. The Roman sandals, the veil dresses and all were all purchased on Taobao, and actresses were even encouraged to help do makeup for each other to cut down on costs," said Lv Haozhe, the director of Go Princess Go.

The 20 million yuan (US$3 million) drama turned out to be quite rewarding both for the director and LeTV - the online video company that produced the drama. As Gan said, the drama gained LeTV 2.2 million new memberships and 41 million yuan in profit, and total revenue has exceeded 100 million yuan.

"It doesn't just happen. The normal shooting period for a 35-episode drama would be done in about 60 days, but we spent 80 days – just to make sure that every scene is at its best," said Gan.

Zhang Tianai, the lead actress who stars as a crown princess who is actually a modern playboy who traveled through time and is transformed into a woman, said she did made an effort to play the role well. "I talked a lot to my male friends for tips, from coaxing to flirting," Zhang said.

At the press conference held by LeTV yesterday, Gan said that a Go Princess Go movie project is being planned.

"We want to make a barrage movie out of the show. The barrages, or the comments sent by viewers while watching, were collected. We're considering putting them into the movie; some may be adapted into lines," Gan said.

Can someone confirm whether the version uploaded in Youtube is the original version or censored version?

I kinda understand Chinese... So I google it and it seems like they are shooting 3 different versions of ending. Gosh! Is that really necessary?

Why not? It can be fun sometimes. Remember Choose Your Own Adventure books?

How come nobody ever heard this drama before sounds interesting.

You know that place some of us might have been watching Please Come Back Mister? (Viki)?

They also seem to have this show as well. Maybe they got it in time.

Wait. I thought that China had banned all works of fiction having to do with time travel? Was I wrong or did they rescind that?

From: guest , 97 months, post #9
They never banned time travel (fiction). It's a bit more complex and different to that.

Halfway through the second episode. Just dying at the sight of the period equivalent of a high speed car chase consisting of one guy in a chair carried by people trying to catch another guy ahead of him also in a chair being carried by other people.

If anybody wants to watch it go to kissasian.

Another great find, thank you everyone. This show is hilarious.

OK, just finished episode 9 and here's my theory (so guess in other words).

The playboy and the princess are the same person from different parts of the cycle of reincarnation and the blow to the head of the playboy in the swimming pool knocked him backwards into one of his former lives, the princess' accident opening the door to his present day incarnation being able to jump back into one of his past lives with his present personality and future knowledge.

It's on Viki, but it might be the updated version, not the original.

Link to Viki Episodes

Let us know if you figure out which it is, please.

From: guest , 97 months, post #15
Well, I've seen the first 10 on Viki so far.

Here's my complete guess. Viki tend to get these things straight away (look at Please Come Back Mister) so I would tend to think they've got the whole original show as it was originally broadcast. Can't say for absolutely sure though yet but I haven't been disappointed so far, it's really funny and I'm definitely watching it through again after I've finished it.

But then there's this from the article:

"LeTV took down the drama off its website on Wednesday (Jan. 20), and issued a statement that it was asked by “relevant department†to do so. It said the drama would be put online again after “optimizing†the content, but didn’t say when."

What's on Viki is every episode and fully subtitled, I'm guessing they did that as they went along (would have been easiest), furthermore, this article says 'didn't say when (it would go back up).

I'm guessing this is the original. Certainly there's been a few scenes which are quite charged so far.

From: Holly Dunn , 97 months, post #17
This is why I think it might be updated: In the Youtube trailers there was a scene where the main character was dancing with a girl and then was carried over their shoulder by the husband, and then they made love. Anyway, there are references to that scene of them having made love once starting in about episode 15, but I can't find what I saw in the trailers. Maybe I missed it, though.

I think Viki only links to the official works and translates them, so my guess if it was down off the official website it is down off Viki.

But let's all hope I'm wrong.

From: guest , 97 months, post #18
Well, there's a lot of scenes from future episodes at the end of each one. Also, from what I can tell, the videos Viki are showing are actually hosted on Dailymotion. There's a lot of potential sexual tension in some scenes as opposed to anything overtly being shown so far (as far as I know, even tone is sometimes policed by the censors over there).

Anyway, so far I'm enjoying what I've seen from the story so if anything has been taken away, it hasn't noticeably ruined it yet. I'll keep keeping an eye out. If something really big happens, then I guess that'll go a long way towards answering which version it is.

Also, someone's had to have nabbed the whole thing as it was original broabdcast, so there's no way it's not already out there in some place or other.

Ok, not related to the series but I think the quote from the article in OP is so funny that I must share it here.

"Ironically, The Lost Tomb had already made changes from the original novel it was based on to get around China's censors. In the online series, the leading tomb raiders voluntarily hand in the treasure they raided to the government every time."

From: guest (Valkan) , 97 months, post #20
Did I miss something in the first six episodes or was the sex scene just them rolling around on the bed, hugging each other? Not as exciting as I thought.
