Xenoblade Chronicles X (spoilers)

Japanese sci-fi RPG released for the Wii U in December 2015.

Pretty much everything in here will be a spoiler for the game.

This is a really long game directed by a guy obsessed with religion and transhumanism, so there's quite a few instances of 'blurring the lines' when it comes to human physiology and identity. You can see a couple of examples from his other games already in the catalog:

I haven't even come close to finishing the game yet, but I'm sure some other people here have. I want to collate all of the relevant situations that pop up in the game in this thread so someone can submit a complete entry later.

First, in general: All human characters in the game are remotely controlling a machine body (called mimeosomes) built to mimic a human one. It's implied that some upper class humans that knew about the machine bodies were able to ask for alterations to make them more appealing.

Male, Gender/Female/Male transformation: The side-quest House of Cards allows you to unlock the ability to alter any aspect of your avatar's appearance, including its gender. In that quest, a character named Yardley asks you to find him a keycard - once you've helped, his appearance has changed when you next see him.

Female transformation: The side-quest A False Hope shows that there is an alien race with the ability to impersonate other aliens, including humans. One impersonates a companion named Hope in order to use her identity to kill other humans and harvest their mimeosomes for parts.

I'm assuming more of these impersonator aliens appear later.

There might also be more about the machine bodies themselves - maybe a character of the opposite gender is controlling one or maybe a character is controlling a radically different or idealized version of themselves.

Played through more of the game. Found some more stuff involving the impersonator aliens. They're called Definians. They're an all-female race of cloned aliens conditioned and trained to act as spies and assassins.

Female disguise: Sidequest "Rites of Ruin." A deranged human woman is sacrificing aliens to a god. After confronting her, she's saved by a woman that looks exactly like her that claims to be the Avatar of God. After defeating the avatar, she reveals her true form as a Definian.

Male and female disguise: Sidequest "Attack on Biahno Hill." Two scenes. In the first scene, the boyfriend of one of the soldiers in the game turns out to be a Definian that killed and disguised herself as him to lure other soldiers into a trap. After being captured and interrogated as the boyfriend, she takes the form of another female soldier to escape the interrogation room. This happens off-screen.
In the second scene, the same female soldier and the alien disguised as the dead boyfriend are shown arguing. Both turn out to be Definians.

Female disguise: Sidequest "Boze's Ignorance." The player comes across an alien woman that claims her family has been captured by an alien paramilitary. After talking with her, an alien jamming device given to a companion activates and disrupts the alien's disguise, revealing her as a Definian.

Female disguise: Sidequest "Mia is Missing!" The player's protege, Mia, is captured and imprisoned by Definians. While attempting to free her, the player comes across a Definian attempting to impersonate Mia.
