What is your preference? I may be in the minority, but I prefer
realistic portrayals (hormones, electrolysis, surgery) over magical
POOF transformations. Maybe it was because when I was younger I
liked to imagine that if the right set of circumstances happened I
could find myself living as a woman 'against my will.' Thoughts?

I am not a fan of the realistic because most of the people I see
that have gone through the surgery look like they have gone through
the surgery.

I have enjoyed both. I prefer TFs that result from something that
is beyond current human means -- Future or Alien technology /
medicine / science; Mythological / Divine / Universal force or
power; Heck, I sometimes enjoy a fully-immersive VR trip too.
As for "poof" TFs... it depends on the story... and my mood at the
time. James' "Wand of Change" TFs are fun, fast, and painless.
Myself, well I have an affinity for AF / Medallion of Zulo TFs. But
I also greatly enjoyed Mako's painful take transformations - though
that is usually not my cup of tea (so that was surprising to me).
Thanks for dropping a nice discussion on us. Always fun to see the
diversity and ideas.

"Poof" can be ridiculous but so can "Realistic". It all has to be
about storytelling. Either is laughable if it's done wrong, but
both are excitable when done right.
I do prefer the sci-fi transformations, but a good POOF can help
keep elements of the story simple for an enjoyable read.
If you complicate the transformation when writing, you may find in
intricate plot confusing.
Good luck with that whichever with way you choose!

Depends, for me "Realistic" only includes digital Body Swaps and
cyborgs, I prefer physical transformations and they can only
realistically happen with magic as it is impossible for a body to
undergo the complete level of metamorphose. There are other
exceptions where sci if and magic cross over, teleportation,
cocoons etc... But again they lack the body horror element.

Realistic transformations in our times, are not complete change.
They can change only some things, like apperance, but whole
physiology - nope.

I always liked magical because it could happen without you being
aware that someone is doing it to you, and then suddenly you are
picking "yourself" up off of the ground and realize "Wait, why are
my hips different? And when did I have boobs?"
With hormones and surgery I just get the sense that I would still
be me, with my personal traits and features, but as a woman.
Shiver!
Now with a machine that would be cool too in my opinion. Like a
mind swapping machine and when it is finished the only way to swap
back is to reactivate it. Thus putting the terms out of your "will
it to be" capabilities. It's an alluring idea to be stuck.
