Small correction to the credits of the trailer, it should be "Stacy
Keach", not "Stacey Keach".

The picture of cartoon Samantha and NY background's been added to
imdb. There are 7 people on imdb who voted on it. Most of them
didn't like it. :(

Judging on the budget, the time it took to film and the amount of
unknown actors I wouldn't have expect much from this movie
honestly. I'm pretty sure most people here only want to see it
badly because of the TG aspect, not because we think it's good
enough to win any awards.

I've seen it. It's good. It's very very cute and Natalie Knepp was
great.

Saint, you've seen it? Somehow, I'm not that surprised. :)
Without giving away spoilers, can you be more specific about why
it's a good movie and how does it compare to other TG movies?
Thanks.

Here's the thing . . .
As a film fan, I'm not sure how I would rate this movie. I've been
following so much of the development that it's hard to not to be
nice and grade it on a curve. Some scenes look very professional
while others look amateurish. Some lines of dialogue really could
have used another take while others are really freaking funny. Some
characters are really well rounded while others feel
underdeveloped.
As a TG fan this is almost the movie I've always wanted to see.
It's definitely one of the best of all time if only because it has
real heart. I swear Nick Brooks probably surfs Fictionmania and is
probably a fan of The Professor.
So what's good about it?
It's different: I've never seen a gender bender film like this
before. It's less like "Switch" and "Goodbye Charlie" and more like
"Cleo/Leo". But even then it does things differently. The focus is
on a character seeing the world from a different perspective and
becoming a better person and not just focusing on punishment. It's
often very sweet and sentimental.
Natalie Knepp: She is really great. She really gives it her all.
Her performance is both charming, funny and memorable. Even the
most jaded critic can't deny "Sam" is worth watching just for her
facial expressions. She can be boorish, commanding, adorable, sexy
and beautiful. There are moments where she isn't as convincing as
Ellen Barkin in her mannerism but she nails Sam's personality.
Sean Kleier as Doc: Kleier is a decent actor, but he's charismatic
and actually has real chemistry with both Sam and later Samantha.
In the beginning you believe him as a pragmatic friend and later
you believe that he is torn between remaining pragmatism and his
feelings for Samantha.
Bryan Batt: (from Mad Men) as the high powered, gay, fashion expert
is only in the film for 10 minutes and he steals the movie. He is
hilarious but he gives a speech about finding the beauty inside the
coarse and tom-boyish Sam that is genuinely touching. There's a
montage of "girl lessons" that'll be a TG fan's favorite part and
one that I wish was just a little bit longer.
The Script: It's solid, with clever dialogue and definitely a
different take on the cliches of Switch and/or Goodbye Charlie.
I've never, ever seen a gender bender film have the guts to have a
romance between friends and I bet it'll freak a lot of people out.
This is the first time I've ever seen a film where the principle
characters (new girl and the guy friend) are the only ones who are
aware that a transformation has taken place. Lalola doesn't do it.
Cleo/Leo and Switch don't do it. Mechtat ne vredno doesn't do until
after he changes back. Goodbye Charlie does it but they don't
follow through with anything. SAM will probably alienate people
with it's risque subject matter and yet the irony is the tone of
the film is a throwback to Golden Age era of Hollywood romances.
Except for some language it could have been PG.
"She's alive!": Samantha's sexual awakening is hysterical, gutsy,
and over way too quick. Why did they cut away?
It's predictable until it isn't: It was kind of refreshing how the
movie was playing by the numbers and then the 3rd act starts by
wrapping up all the other subplots and focuses on the romance. I
did not see that happening. Unfortunately, I get the feeling a
bunch of stuff got cut for pacing. I'd honestly wouldn't have
minded if the movie was another 15 mintues longer, and I'd really
like to see deleted scenes that were shot. A year ago a crew member
posted a video of a test of a fake bottle being broke over someones
head. That and a page of dialogue in the script seemed to be cut.
The supporting cast: James McCaffrey, Sarah Scott, Lucille Sharp
and Allie Schulz are all really good unfortunately I wish their
characters had a little more depth to them or at least they had
more to do. McCaffrey is sleazy but in a fun way. Scott is a bitch
but she's also fun. Sharp is so damn sweet but her subplot could
have been resolved better. Sharp is really great not given much to
do.
The Weak:
Brock Harris as Sam. My first complaint is he doesn't look enough
like Natalie Knepp. My second complaint is that he is a decent
actor and he definitely looks like an Alpha Male but there is so
much more going on under the surface with this character that
needed to be conveyed in the limited time we see him. Sam seems
like a Steve Brooks Switch character but there's a lot of sadness
underneath his surliness that Harris doesn't quite sell.
Morgan Fairchild: As the boss of the company (who puts Samanthas
lecherous boss in his place) she's fine, unfortunately all of her
jokes fell flat with me.
Speed Talkers: I loved the idea behind this bit but the payoff
didn't quite work for me. It could have been executed better.
Camera angles and lighting: Some shots in this movie look great but
there are quite a few that feel sloppy, rushed or lacking in any
kind of understanding of composition. I'm sure the problem was with
time and coverage. Time is money on a film shoot and they probably
only had 1 camera but some high angle shots were really puzzling.
Some of the lighting was really flat and some was really nice. I
just wish there was more consistency.
Not enough TG tropes: There's some great TG moments but I really
was hoping for more, but that's probably just what happens when you
dream about seeing a movie for a couple of years.

First TG movie I've ever seen that dealt with the sense of smell
involved in sexual attraction. Great scene!

"Lalola doesn't do it"
Could you please expand on this a bit more? As far as I know, in
none of the Lalola's do very many more people know about what's
happened than just two, furthermore does it even make a difference
when it's slightly more than 2 versus 2? (Best as I can tell it
seems to average between 3 and 4 - and that's including the person
responsible for the whole situation in the first place. On that
note, what's Stacy Keach's role in all this?).
|

Lalola doesn't do it:
All I meant by that is I've never seen a movie or TV show where the
protagonist is transformed and he confides in a male friend. It's
always another woman because who better to help the "new woman"
than a female. If there is a romance it's the female friend who
knows the "new woman's" secret and the love interest is mostly in
the dark. What SAM does that's refreshing is have the story be
about the relationship between 2 friends dealing with the
transformation and that friendship turns to love because one of
them becomes the opposite sex.
The movie was written by guys in their 50s so the movie has a
Classic Hollywood feel. It's mostly banter and physical comedy
(thankfully no falling over in high heels cliche) but it definitely
has some modern sensibilities. There's a menstruation joke so the
filmmakers have more balls than any other English gender bender
I've seen.
There's even a "cat fight" between Sam and another woman that was
cliched but actually had me laughing out loud because of Natalie
Knepp's performance. She's a very petite woman and to see her dive
over a couch and then get yanked off the ground under a guys arm
was really funny.

This is just a minor thing for me Saint, but does Sam ever wear
nail polish or get her nails painted in the movie. Obviously not a
huge thing but a nice little detail.
