Woke up this morning with an idea in my head for a new take on the
old "everybody swaps bodies" concept. Unlike the daisy-chain swap
of Futurama, or the paired swaps of Gilligan's Island, all the
swaps happen at the same time. Here are the salient features:
1. There are two chambers, corresponding to the "mind-transfer"
helmets or whatnot. Minds in one chamber get swapped with the minds
in the other.
2. There must be the same number of people in each chamber or the
swap doesn't happen.
3. You end up with your mind in the body of someone who was in the
other chamber, but it's completely random. You can't "force" which
of the bodies you'll land in by both of you standing at the back,
or any dodge like that. (Also, you won't swap with someone who was
in the same chamber as you; this keeps you from being able to force
only same-gender swaps by putting all the guys in one chamber and
all the girls in the other, but you *can* force all the swaps to be
cross-gender by the same method.)
4. There's no guarantee that the person whose body you swap into
will also swap into yours. (Alternatively, you *are* guaranteed
that they'll swap into a different body, which I find a more
interesting possibility because you won't just be swapped with your
paired counterpart.)
5. Because of the above constraints, the swap doesn't work unless
there are at least three people in each chamber. Also because of
the constraints, you can't just put everybody back where they
belong by re-running the machine. (I haven't worked out the math
yet, but it may be possible to do multiple re-swaps to restore the
original state; if this is true, add a constraint that the machine
has to "rest" for a period of time before it can be re-used.)
If anyone wants to take this idea and run with it, by all means be
my guest.

Interesting concept. Could create some interesting stories. I'm not
sure my mind can generate a story that complex yet.

One thing for 'swapping back' would be:
If anyone lands back in their body, they step out of the device (if
they're the only ones, someone who is in the wrong body also steps
out momentarily to make it even).
As people land back in their body, they step out. If there's a
'non-correct' body standing outside to keep things even, they step
in to make it even again. Once you're down to 6 (3 each) left, then
it's just hit-or-miss. You have a one-in-three shot of entering
your body when transferred from the other device. One of your other
two transferees, if you found your right body, has a 1-in-2 chance
of hitting the correct body. And then, obviously, the third guy is
1-in-1. However, there is no 'random cycle', it would be 'truly
random' each time. So, theoretically, you could never make it back
into your own body again. Say you always wind up in Jim's body,
instead of yours.
Interesting concept.

Sounds interesting if truely random, then couples could swap and
not always be an opposite sex pair.

It appears to me difficult to think of a machine which wouldn't
work with less than six persons. It's like a car that wouldn't
start with less than four people onboard. But there could be a
rule not to use the machine with only two people, a rule that
people could try and bend.

You could have the floor on either side be a scale, or perhaps have
at least six different triggers inside needed to activate the
device. If someone were going to build a machine to these specs, I
would imagine it's not difficult to add something to force the
scenario.

"... perhaps have at least six different triggers inside..."
Hmmm... like the old Star Trek Transporter pads area. Weren't there
like 6 or 7 pads arranged on the deck / area, or something like
that?

Apparently, six.

There's a similar one like that on the BE Addventure, it's called
"part scrambler", 3 people enter, it randomly scrambles heads,
chests and legs, sequentially (rotates parts clockwise or
counter-clockwise). Fun idea, no one ever seems to run with the
concept though, I guess it's too intelligent for the average reader
to follow, *shrugs*
