Does Fictionmania care about unfinished stories?
From: greendoubleaught , 159 months, post #1
I usually have a lot of stories going at once. Right now I'm working on:
  • a TG story done in a Jane Austen manner, set in Regency England
  • a modern-day story about the only shapeshifter in the world secretly using his talents to become a model
  • a series of stories based of the condition in the movie "Zerophilia"
  • a story about a boy who gets one wish on his birthday for every candle

Trouble is, these stories are still not done. I suspect readers hate unfinished stories, but Fictionmania has a filter option for "finished/not finished." Is it really okay to post them like that? Should I finish them first? If so, which one?

From: dis_guise , 159 months, post #2
If you think that though unfinished they've already got enough of the erotic goods to interest readers, post them whether they're finished or not, especially if you seriously plan to finish them later -- when you can add the conclusion as another posting or have the complete version replace the incomplete. At least that's what I would do. I (writing as Blot on FM) try to finish mine before I post, but on other sites I've posted unfinished things aplenty.

I wouldn't have the nerve to post anything historical. I've seen good stories badly marred by a mess of solecisms, not just anachronisms, and even when I know a period and its literature I just don't even try.

Yeah, of the three stories I've written one is finished definitively, another is finished as well but has a hook for a sequel that I may or may not ever do and the other is intended to be a serial but any time I've tried to continue writing it I'm completely unhappy with anything I've got and scrap it... writer's block is a real pain.

Still like dis_guise said, if you really do intend to finish them but you want them posted now definitely submit them.

And actually, I've been thinking for a long time now about giving duties to an Orb of Cynisca sequel to someone else if they feel they want to write it since I really am never completely satisfied with anything I write.

just end them as best you can!

it's not hard to write a ending (a GOOD ending is another matter! ;)

Just say something like...

But none of that mattered anymore!

They looked at each other romantically and walked off into the sunset. But the sunset got bigger and bigger and there was a tremendous force of wind and light as the nuclear bomb blew up the city where they lived.

The end.

see how easy it is!

Some of my stories are unfinished... As many know. But life happens and you can't always commit time, but I am finding some time recently.

I will still write Ultimate App 2 as multipul parts but will also release complete stories too. It happens to be that sometimes you have a big idea and wanna get it out there as soon as you can. That is normally the case for me and I end up writing it part by part to share it with the community quicker.

And Rugal, I would love to take a stab at writing a sequel to the Orb or Cynisca.

That's good advice, thanks. I think these stories aren't yet far enough along to warrant posting, but I'll start to focus on them one by one, to get them into a postable state.

Any unfinished story should have enough titillating things happen that it's already good fetish porn, even if it's incomplete. (Okay, "fetish porn" is maybe a bit harsh, but most of what's on FictionMania is meant to excite the reader sexually, no?) Try to get your stories that far along before you post them... maybe you can even go the extra mile and finish them. I know how easy it is to get stuck on a story and stop writing.

I'd say overall the most important thing is just to get to some major point in the story. It might be worth posting something then if you want. Then the next goal is to get to the next important part in the story.

If you approach it like that, almost like the time in between each major place in the story is it's own little project, it might be easier to finish something that way. Then instead of one long hard to finish story it's like having a bunch of smaller easier to finish stories, if that makes sense.

If you've got something you just know you're never gonna finish but you've put a bunch of work into it, it might be okay (or possibly even a good idea) to see if someone else would want to finish it for you. Some people's trouble is starting things, for others it's finishing them.

Since you asked, the Zerophilia one sounds most interesting. Sounds like it would be the longest though, so I'd say the candle one might be second most interesting if you wanted to aim for something shorter.

Personally, I never post unfinished stories, but that's me. Plenty of others post unfinished stories that never get finished. I don't see a problem.

Fictionmania has no policy about posting unfinished stories Just look around, there's a lot of them there.

Personally, I'd prefer it if they'd finished them before posting.
