Description

In the 13th Century anonymous Arthurian prose romance Cassiodorus, there are two actual gender changes and several instances of cross dressing. In the relavent gender changes, the knight Sir Licorus dons a woman's robe and is transformed into a woman; he becomes male again when he takes the robe off. More appropriate is the story of the knight Sir Calogrenant; hapless and hopeless as a knight, Sir Calogrenant is accidentally turned into a beautiful woman by a talisman. When she returns to the court of King Arthur, she finds herself more successful at court as a woman then as a man, as all the eligable young knights vie for her attention. Eventually she becomes one of Gueneviere's ladies in waiting, and subsequent to that marries one of the other knights. One of several side stories to the main story of the knight Cassiodorus. NOTE: as far as I know, this romance has not been translated into English, and is extant only in Middle French.
