Eric Van Lustbader book The Ring of Five Dragons

Description

When Annon Ashera, a male humanoid alien V'ornn, is mortally wounded, his consciousness is transferred into the body of a teenage Kundalan girl named Riane. Riane/Annon plays a key role as a prophesied heroine in van Lustbader's "The Pearl" saga which (so far) includes the books "The Veilf of a Thousnad Tears" and "Mistress of the Pearl."

Also featuring in all of the books are the Gyrgons, the ruling caste of the V'ornn. It's revealed in the first book that Gyrgons are really neither male nor female (though male pronouns are typically used as they are typically in male form) and that they can change shape. In the first book, the rogue Gyrgon Nith Sahor appears briefly in one scene in an alternate persona, Mastress Kannna, and as Giyan, one of the female protagonists.
